We hope Europe will restore its sovereignty, return to the right track, PM Kobakhidze

“We hope that, ultimately, Europe will manage to restore its sovereignty and return to the right track, which is vitally important for our country,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Monday.

Kobakhidze was responding to a question from journalists about a letter by philosopher Zaza Shatirishvili, in which he wrote about German authorities and political opponents targeting the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and discussions about banning it.

Kobakhidze claimed support for the AfD has been growing year by year, creating what he described as a significant risk for the current governing coalition ahead of the next parliamentary elections.

“At the same time, we all know what the main cause of the processes that have unfolded, primarily in Ukraine, is. The main goal is to weaken Europe. The main goal of the ‘deep state’ is to weaken Europe, and this is also the practical result of what has happened in our region, which is very regrettable,” Kobakhidze said.

He said Georgia was particularly concerned about developments in Europe and the European Union, both politically and economically.

“We especially care about Europe and the European Union, and therefore we are very concerned about the political and economic processes unfolding in Europe. We hope that, ultimately, Europe will manage to restore its sovereignty and return to the right track, which is vitally important for our country,” he said.

Kobakhidze noted Georgia is traditionally part of the European cultural space, making a strong Europe vitally important for the country.

“Strong Europe is vitally important for our country,” the prime minister said.
