Irakli Kobakhidze: Principled Stance of the Government and Georgian People Kept the Country at Peace

There was a direct attempt to draw Georgia into the war and open a “second front” in the country, with the opposition’s support and actions creating the conditions for this domestically. Fortunately, those efforts failed, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists.

According to the Prime Minister, during the first days of the war, the opposition staged what he described as “completely incomprehensible” protests against the Georgian government.

“These were acts of betrayal. They joined calls for sanctions to be imposed and for volunteer fighters to be sent, while welcoming decisions by foreign countries that ran counter to the principled and patriotic position of the Georgian government. All of this exposed their true intentions.

“As you know, there was a direct attempt to involve the country in the war and open a second front in Georgia. Domestically, these efforts were supported and facilitated by the opposition’s actions. Fortunately, they failed, although they spared no effort to drag the country into the conflict and into the war.

“It was solely the principled stance of the government and, most importantly, of the Georgian people that preserved peace in our country and enabled Georgia to continue its development with dignity.

“I fully agree with the substance and message of Levan Machavariani’s remarks. Of course, all of their actions related to the war amounted to betrayal.

“We have repeatedly asked what Georgia failed to do with regard to Ukraine that it should have done, and we have never received an answer. This made it clear that all of their actions were entirely speculative, driven by external interests and aimed not at serving the country’s interests, but at undermining them,” Kobakhidze said.
