Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze praised the importance of preserving traditional values while speaking to journalists during a May 17 march dedicated to the Day of Family Purity and Respect for Parents, a holiday established by the Georgian Orthodox Church in 2014.
“This celebration and today’s event are dedicated to protecting our traditional values,” Kobakhidze said, describing the day as “festive in every sense.”
He expressed gratitude to Patriarch Ilia II, the head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, for initiating the occasion. “I want to thank His Holiness and Beatitude for giving us this day. It is very important that we celebrate it every year in this way,” he stated.
The Day of Family Purity was introduced as a religious and cultural counterpoint to the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, which is also observed globally on May 17.
