Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze will attend events in Budapest marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, following an invitation from Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar.
The main commemorative event will take place in the Hungarian capital’s central square on October 23, where Magyar is expected to address attendees.
“Freedom, which Central Europe finally regained in 1989, did not begin in 1989. Part of its history was written 33 years earlier, on the streets of Budapest,” Magyar said in his official invitation letter.
“It is an honor to invite you to Budapest to jointly commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Your presence at the event, where we will pay tribute to people whose courage continues to inspire us in shaping our common European future and whose legacy still speaks to the challenges of our time, would be a great honor for us,” the letter released by the Georgian government’s press office said on Thursday.
