Georgia’s position on restoring diplomatic relations with Russia has not changed, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has said, adding that obstacles to restoring ties remain in place.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Kobakhidze said the government’s priorities remained the peaceful resolution of the conflict, maintaining humanitarian contacts and developing trade and economic relations with Russia.

“No new phase is actually beginning. Our section at the Swiss Embassy has been actively working, and once again we have seen the need to appoint a special representative alongside the section’s ongoing work,” Kobakhidze said.

He said work was continuing on all three priorities, with the Geneva International Discussions and the section at the Swiss Embassy remaining active.

“Restoring diplomatic relations has its own barriers. This situation has not changed and, accordingly, neither has our position,” Kobakhidze said.

Georgia severed diplomatic relations with Russia in 2008 following the Russo-Georgian war. Switzerland has represented Georgia’s interests in Russia and Russia’s interests in Georgia since diplomatic ties were severed.
