Georgian PM Kobakhidze Says Veterans’ Heroism Instils Patriotism and Values in Younger Generations

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has said that the heroism and sacrifice of military veterans play a crucial role in shaping the values of younger generations, fostering patriotism and strengthening their commitment to the country.

Speaking at an event marking Veterans Day, Kobakhidze paid tribute to former service members who fought for Georgia’s freedom and contributed to international security in conflict zones around the world.

“I congratulate veterans of different generations who fought with dedication for the freedom of our homeland and global security, both in Georgia and in conflict zones across the world,” the prime minister said.

Kobakhidze emphasised that the examples set by veterans help instil fundamental values, love for the country and a strong sense of patriotism among young people.

“Today, we honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice — giving their lives for the freedom and territorial integrity of our country,” he said.

The prime minister also outlined measures introduced by the government in recent years to recognise veterans’ contributions and improve social protection for former military personnel and their families.

According to Kobakhidze, significant changes have been made to financial assistance programmes, including increased compensation for the families of those killed in combat.

Monthly payments to families of fallen service members, initially set at 500 Georgian lari, have gradually increased and will reach 1,280 lari in 2026.

The removal of an age-related restriction linked to retirement eligibility has enabled an additional 30,000 veterans to receive financial assistance.

Meanwhile, social benefits for veterans with disabilities have increased by approximately 150%, while household subsidies have risen from 22 to 100 lari.

Kobakhidze said Second World War veterans receive monthly payments and additional financial assistance on commemorative occasions. Families of veterans who died after the war have also been granted financial assistance of 800 lari.

The prime minister stressed that healthcare remains another key priority alongside social protection.

“Under the universal healthcare programme, medical services for veterans are fully funded up to a limit of 15,000 lari,” Kobakhidze said.

He added that the government has financed the Veterans Clinical Hospital since 2016, with the facility undergoing renovations and receiving modern medical equipment.

“The hospital provides medical services free of charge to veterans and their family members,” the prime minister said.

Kobakhidze reaffirmed the government’s commitment to recognising veterans’ service and ensuring continued support for those who have contributed to Georgia’s national security and territorial integrity.
