Georgian PM calls for stronger multilateral cooperation at UN summit

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has called for stronger international and regional cooperation to prevent conflicts and promote peaceful settlements, speaking at a Multilateral Partnership Summit held during the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

The summit was opened by European Council President António Costa. Kobakhidze’s participation was part of his visit to New York for the UN General Assembly, where he is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings.

In his address, Kobakhidze spoke about challenges to international stability and stressed what he described as the importance of multilateral partnerships in conflict prevention, international security and peace-building.

He also addressed the situation in Georgia, saying that the continued occupation of 20% of the country’s territory affects the lives and rights of people living there.

“We remain committed to the peaceful resolution of the conflict, including through de-occupation, reconciliation and restoring trust between conflict-affected communities,” Kobakhidze said.

He said international support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remained an important part of the process.

Kobakhidze also highlighted the importance of closer regional cooperation, saying countries in the same region face common security and economic challenges.

“South Caucasus is going through a period of significant change, with increasing attention being paid to its economic and strategic potential,” he said, adding that there were now broader opportunities for practical regional cooperation in areas including trade, connectivity and economic development.

The prime minister also welcomed progress in peace processes involving Georgia’s neighbours, according to the Georgian government.
