Irakli Vekua, Acting Ambassador of Georgia to Italy, has announced his resignation.
In a statement, Vekua reflected on his decision, quoting the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa:
“As Pessoa wrote, scars of battles avoided… We all have those. I have many. But there comes a time for truth when people seek each other out, and encourage one another. That time is now, and I share these thoughts with you, my friends and colleagues, whether you believe I am right or wrong.”
He expressed gratitude for his years in Georgia’s diplomatic service, calling it a profound journey that taught him resilience and commitment.
“Today, I say goodbye to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has given me so much—more than anyone could hope for. Each time I faltered, I turned back, driven by the knowledge that beyond us lie sacred Georgian graves and the haunting remnants of our history. This farewell is filled with warmth, strength, and gratitude for your forgiveness,” Vekua wrote.
His resignation marks another high-profile departure in a series of recent shifts within Georgia’s diplomatic corps.
