MEP Rasa Jukneviciene has accused Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream, of not only halting the country’s European trajectory but actively reversing it, during the presentation of a European Parliament report on Georgia before the Foreign Affairs Committee.

“Georgian Dream has not merely stopped Georgia’s European path - it has effectively turned it in the opposite direction. Backsliding has been recorded across nine priorities that were conditions for candidate status. Despite statements that EU integration remains a strategic goal, senior officials and government-linked media continue to conduct systematic anti-European campaigns,” Jukneviciene said.

She stressed that the report underscored the importance of imposing targeted sanctions on “Bidzina Ivanishvili and others responsible for democratic backsliding,” alleged election manipulation, human rights violations, and the political persecution of opponents.

“This report highlights the need for targeted sanctions against those accountable for democratic erosion, election fraud, human rights abuses, and the legal persecution of political opponents,” Jukneviciene added.
