European Parliament member Rasa Juknevičienė has called on the European Commission and Council to initiate an independent international investigation following allegations that chemical substances were mixed into water supplies in Georgia during last year’s antigovernment protests

“The fact that the Georgian Government is afraid of an independent investigation only shows that they fear truth and punishment. This also suggests that the findings revealed by the BBC are likely accurate. We must support the Georgian people in their struggle, because Georgia is Europe,” Juknevičienė said.

She referenced a recent BBC investigation indicating that chemical substances, historically used since World War I to suppress dissent, were allegedly deployed during protests in 2024.
