The European Union has taken steps to restrict the movement of individuals linked to Georgia’s authorities who are responsible for repression, including Georgian diplomats, according to Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Kallas said Europe is preventing certain representatives connected to the Georgian Government from travelling freely within the EU.

“The European Union has already withdrawn funding from Georgia due to democratic backsliding. Today, Europe is preventing individuals linked to the Georgian authorities who are responsible for repression, including Georgian diplomats, from moving freely within the EU,” she said.

Kallas stressed that while the EU continues to support the Georgian public, it will not tolerate those responsible for repressive policies.

“The Georgian people have our full support, but there is no place in our Union for those who represent repression,” she added.

The European Commission has also suspended visa-free travel for holders of Georgian diplomatic, service and official passports for 12 months, until March 6 2027.
