European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has said that pressure must be exerted on Russia, rather than Ukraine, to bring the war to an end.
Speaking to journalists ahead of today’s European Council meeting, Kallas said the EU had stood by Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, adding that European support was one of the reasons Moscow had failed to achieve its objectives.
“Europe has stood by Ukraine since Russia started the war. This is one of the reasons why Russia has failed to achieve its goals,” Kallas stated.
She stressed that efforts to end the war should focus primarily on increasing pressure on Moscow.
“To end the war, we must put pressure on Russia, not Ukraine,” she said.
Kallas added that Europe had sufficient strength and influence to make a meaningful difference to the situation.
“Europe has the strength and influence to change the situation,” she noted.
