Kobakhidze: History has taught Georgia the value of sovereignty and the need to safeguard stability

Georgia’s historical experience has underscored the importance of safeguarding sovereignty and stability, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said in his address to the General Debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Kobakhidze said Georgia had stood at the crossroads of civilizations for centuries, embracing different cultures, peoples and ideas while firmly preserving its unique identity.

“For centuries, we have stood at the crossroads of civilizations, opening our doors to different cultures, peoples and ideas while remaining steadfast in protecting our unique identity and distinct character,” the prime minister said.

He noted that Georgia’s statehood had been tested on numerous occasions, but those challenges had only strengthened the country’s determination to chart its own course.

“Georgia’s statehood has been tested time and again, yet these challenges have only reinforced our determination to choose our own path.

“History has also taught us that we must never lose sight of the value of sovereignty, that stability must be safeguarded, and that the strength of the international order ultimately depends on the equal application of the same principles to all states.

“Georgia attaches particular importance to upholding these principles,” Kobakhidze said.
