Romania's Secretary of State for Energy, Cristian Bușoi, has described the Green Energy Corridor project as “extremely important”, saying it will strengthen energy cooperation between Azerbaijan, Georgia and the European Union.
Speaking at the 12th ministerial meeting of the Green Energy Corridor initiative in Baku, Bușoi said the project would reinforce links between Azerbaijan, Georgia and the EU through Romania and Hungary.
“I believe this project is extremely important because it will strengthen relations between Azerbaijan, Georgia and the European Union via Romania and Hungary,” he said.
Bușoi said the initiative is expected to diversify the European Union's electricity supply at competitive prices, subject to the completion of the project's feasibility study and in coordination with the planned Black Sea submarine electricity cable.
He stressed the importance of creating synergies between the Black Sea Cable Company, the Green Energy Corridor Company and the wider Green Energy Corridor initiative.
According to Bușoi, the project will also contribute to the EU's decarbonisation objectives by reducing carbon dioxide emissions and strengthening energy security through greater reliance on renewable energy rather than fossil fuels, which he said are more vulnerable to geopolitical developments and tensions.
He added that the Green Energy Corridor would improve integration among participating countries and enhance regional cooperation.
The Green Energy Corridor initiative aims to transport renewable electricity generated in the South Caucasus to European markets, including through the planned Black Sea undersea electricity cable linking the region with the European Union.
