The lawyer for former State Security Service chief Grigol Liluashvili has accused prosecutors of misleading the public in an attempt to justify “unfounded charges” against her client.

“The prosecution has long gone beyond legal audacity in this case and has moved on to misleading the public through comments made on television after every hearing,” lawyer Lana Tsertsvadze said Tuesday.

She claimed prosecutors were unable to present evidence in court to substantiate the charges against Liluashvili and were instead seeking to justify their case through public statements.

“They want to justify the unfounded charges brought against Mr Grigol, for which they physically cannot present evidence in court,” Tsertsvadze said.

She said the defence had about 50 witnesses and that all evidence should be examined in court before a verdict was delivered.

Prosecutors arrested Liluashvili on 23 December 2025. He is accused of accepting a particularly large bribe as part of a group acting by prior agreement.

The charges carry a prison sentence of between 11 and 15 years.
