Baiba Braže, Latvia’s Foreign Minister, criticized Georgia’s recently enacted Foreign Agents Registration Act in a statement on social media. She said the Georgian government had taken “another big step to quash hopes and aspirations of its people for a European future.”
According to Braže, the law “restricts fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed to all in a democratic society.”
The legislation, which came into force on May 31, requires media, civil society organizations, and other groups receiving foreign funding to register as “foreign agents,” drawing widespread international criticism for its potential to stifle independent voices.
