The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday expressed concern over “baseless accusations” and “hostile language” used by representatives of the ruling Georgian Dream party against German Ambassador Peter Fischer.

“We stand in full solidarity with Ambassador Fischer and our German colleagues. The unfounded accusations and hostile rhetoric directed at him by Georgian Dream representatives are deeply troubling. Targeting diplomats in this manner not only undermines mutual respect but also further isolates Georgia,” the Ministry said in a statement.

Germany’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday recalled its Ambassador to Georgia for consultations. The Ministry said the decision followed months of “agitation” by Georgian authorities against the European Union, Germany and Ambassador Fischer personally. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul decided to recall Fischer to discuss “how to proceed” with future cooperation.
