Opposition, NGOs are Georgia’s enemies, Georgian Dream guarantees peace, stability, ruling party MP Machavariani

Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party member Levan Machavariani has accused opposition parties, NGOs and activists of repeatedly attempting to destabilize the country and organize revolutions, claiming that their actions have been coordinated with foreign actors.

In a social media post on Monday, Machavariani alleged that attempts to destabilize Georgia began after the 2020 parliamentary elections and continued through the 2022 EU candidate-status process, protests over the “foreign agents” law in 2023 and 2024, and demonstrations in late 2024.

Machavariani claimed that foreign actors sought to bring the opposition to power in order to involve Georgia in the Russia-Ukraine war. He also accused USAID-funded organizations of contributing to efforts to create political instability, and alleged that the opposition and NGOs were trained to organize protests and revolutionary scenarios.

Referring to the 2020-2021 political crisis, Machavariani accused opposition forces of rejecting the election results, attempting to enter the Central Election Commission and seeking snap parliamentary elections. He also linked former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia’s resignation and subsequent return to politics to what he described as a broader plan to weaken Georgian Dream.

Machavariani further argued that similar efforts were made in 2022, when Georgia applied for EU membership. He claimed that opposition parties and NGOs sought to portray the government as unwilling to pursue European integration and used the June 2022 protests to demand the government’s resignation.

He added further attempts to destabilize the country followed during protests against the “foreign agents” law in 2023 and 2024. He also alleged that organizations and opposition groups were preparing for a new attempt to overthrow the government in late 2024.

He accused protesters of using violence and claimed that searches of opposition and NGO offices uncovered pyrotechnics, “Molotov cocktails” and flammable substances allegedly intended for use during violent demonstrations.

Machavariani also referred to the October 4, 2025 protests, claiming that the opposition had been preparing for another attempt to overthrow the government and that protesters attempted to storm the presidential palace.

Despite what he described as continuous “sabotage” and attempts to destabilize the country, Machavariani said Georgian state institutions had remained strong and that Georgia was now more independent and sovereign than at any point since regaining independence.

He said the government was focused on maintaining peace and stability, protecting national identity, traditions and culture, and restoring Georgia’s historical role as a regional connectivity hub.

Machavariani concluded by directly addressing opposition parties, NGOs and activists, calling them “enemies of Georgia” and arguing that an increasing number of their own supporters recognize Georgian Dream, under the leadership of Bidzina Ivanishvili, as the country’s only guarantee of peace and stability.

He said the opposition and NGOs should apologize to the overwhelming majority of Georgian society for what he described as their “harmful” and “dirty” actions.
