Levan Machavariani, First Deputy Chair of the Georgian Dream parliamentary faction, on Friday said the ruling party had done “everything” necessary to establish a genuine partnership with the United States, following a message from US President Donald Trump to Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
In a post on social media, Machavariani referred to Trump’s letter, in which the US President said he looked forward to strengthening cooperation with Georgia to build “a safer, more prosperous and peaceful future”.
Machavariani argued that relations between Georgia and the United States had deteriorated under former President Joe Biden's administration, which he accused of using “lies, blackmail, threats, disinformation and double standards” against the Georgian Government. He also claimed the administration had sought to damage bilateral ties.
The lawmaker said the ruling party had consistently supported closer cooperation with the United States, citing shared positions with the Trump administration on national sovereignty, the war in Ukraine, the role of non-governmental organisations and criticism of the European Union's bureaucracy.
Machavariani added that the Georgian Government remained ready to hold talks with US officials “at any time” to develop a roadmap reflecting the interests of both countries.
“Based on all this, we remain optimistic that a genuine friendship and partnership between Georgia and the United States will begin,” he wrote.
