The Chair of Georgia’s Parliamentary Committee on European Integration has congratulated Hungarian opposition figure Péter Magyar and his party on what he described as a “convincing victory” in elections, while calling for continued strategic cooperation between Tbilisi and Budapest.
Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, Levan Makhashvili said he and colleagues had participated in election observation activities in Hungary, including in Budapest and regional areas, within the framework of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
He said the election process had taken place in a “peaceful environment” and was competitive, adding that both winners and losers had accepted the outcome. He also referred to preliminary assessments by the OSCE/ODIHR mission, saying they outlined both positive and negative aspects of the vote.
Makhashvili criticised parts of Georgia’s domestic opposition, accusing them of seeking political reassurance in the defeat of former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
He said opposition hopes were “disappointed” following statements by the incoming leadership, which he claimed reaffirmed intentions to continue cooperation with Georgia and avoid interference in internal affairs.
The MP expressed hope that Georgia’s strategic partnership with Hungary would continue under the new government, emphasising shared interests in security and economic cooperation.
He added that political tensions or external commentary should not undermine bilateral relations, and said Georgia would continue to prioritise strengthening ties with international partners.
