The Georgian government will open around 3,000 paid internship positions across the public sector from Sept. 1 as part of a government programme aimed at attracting young people into public service, Government Administration head Levan Zhorzholiani said on Monday.
The official said the initiative was intended to bring "new blood" and a new generation of motivated young professionals into state institutions.
He added nearly half of the participants in last year's internship programme either extended their internships or secured employment at the government institutions where they had been placed.
He said the programme would provide young people with practical experience, professional qualifications and skills that could be valuable throughout their careers, including in the private sector.
Zhorzholiani noted that the government had asked municipalities to increase the number of internship places so that more young people could complete paid internships in their home regions.
He said the programme was launched at the initiative of Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
