Georgian MPs Attend Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians in Uzbekistan

A Georgian parliamentary delegation is taking part in the 12th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the Georgian Parliament’s press service said.

The delegation includes Lika Shartava, Deputy Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Culture Committee, and Zurab Rurua, Deputy Chair of the Sports Committee.

The conference, titled “Reclaiming Human Rights, Justice and Dignity for All in Challenging Times,” is being held from September 4 to 6 and is organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Senate of Uzbekistan.

Through interactive panel discussions and working groups, lawmakers and experts from 60 countries have addressed a range of issues, including digital security, the protection of fundamental human rights in conflict zones, challenges posed by climate change, and the political and economic rights of young people.

During the discussions, members of the Georgian delegation shared the country’s experience in aligning national legislation with democratic standards and implementing reforms aimed at Euro-Atlantic integration.

They stressed that the active participation of young parliamentarians is critical to strengthening democratic institutions and protecting human rights amid growing regional and global instability.

Addressing the conference, Shartava also spoke about the occupation of Georgian territories, noting that 20% of the country remains under Russian military occupation, which she said continues to pose significant challenges to Georgia in achieving its national objectives.

Shartava also addressed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting a number of reforms implemented by Georgia and the progress achieved in this area.
