Georgia attaches particular importance to the international community’s united and firm support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili said at the sixth summit of the International Crimea Platform, held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Bochorishvili said Georgia had experienced firsthand the consequences of violations of international norms and principles over several decades, stressing the country’s commitment to international law and the principles underpinning a peaceful and secure international order.
“Ladies and gentlemen, it is a great honour to be here today, to participate in this important meeting and to speak on behalf of Georgia.
“For Georgia, the issue of Crimea and Ukraine is not merely another item on the international agenda. We know all too well what it means to have a country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity violated.
“That is why the international community’s united and firm position in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is particularly important to us.
“For decades, Georgia has experienced firsthand the consequences of the erosion of the international order and the disregard for international norms and principles. Russia’s occupation of two Georgian regions continues to this day and remains one of the most serious security challenges facing our country.
“We know how devastating the impact of occupation can be on individuals, families and society as a whole. It is precisely because of this experience that Georgia attaches particular importance to solidarity, respect for international law and unwavering commitment to the principles upon which a peaceful and secure international order must be built.
“The International Crimea Platform is an important forum for maintaining international attention on Ukraine and, more importantly, for translating our shared commitments into concrete action.
“Georgia remains committed to peace and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and we thank the international community for its firm support of these efforts.
“We welcome all genuine efforts aimed at ending the war and achieving lasting peace, peace based on the UN Charter and the principles of international law.
“Georgia stands firmly with the Ukrainian people and once again reaffirms its unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders,” Bochorishvili said.
