Georgia, Singapore seek closer political and economic ties, FM

Georgia and Singapore are interested in deepening political and economic cooperation, Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili said on Wednesday after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze's meetings with Singapore's leadership.

Speaking after Kobakhidze's meetings with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Botchorishvili said the talks focused on opportunities to expand bilateral political and economic relations.

"Both countries have an interest in developing cooperation between our nations, which will, in turn, promote cooperation and partnership between our regions," she said.

Botchorishvili added stronger ties with Singapore were important for both countries and would help reinforce Georgia's role in the South Caucasus and the wider region.

She noted that the discussions also covered cooperation in international organisations and ways to strengthen business and economic relations.

"There is real potential to deepen relations between our countries, and we need to take steps to fully utilise that potential," Botchorishvili said, adding that the prime minister's visit would also include meetings with business representatives aimed at expanding commercial ties.
