Georgia has officially applied for EU membership earlier today, Vato Makharoblishvili, Georgia’s ambassador to the EU has tweeted.

“In these utterly difficult times, a truly historic moment for my country. Today Georgia officially applied for EU membership. Honored to have presented an official application to France’s Permanent Representative  to EU Philippe Léglise-Costa, current Presidency of the EU Council,” Makharoblishvili said.

Ukraine was the first to apply for the EU amid hostilities in the country.

Initially Georgia had plans to apply for EU membership by 2024. However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine  has accelerated the move.
