Estonia rejects any attempt to alter Georgia's borders by force on war anniversary

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has reaffirmed Estonia's support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting any attempt to change internationally recognised borders by force on the 18th anniversary of the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.

In a statement on Friday, Tsahkna said Russia's invasion of Georgia in 2008 demonstrated its disregard for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighbouring states.

"Estonia stands with the Georgian people and firmly supports Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders," he said.

"We reject any attempt to change internationally recognised borders through the use of force."

The statement comes as Georgia marks 18 years since the outbreak of the August 2008 war. According to official Georgian figures, the five-day conflict claimed the lives of more than 400 people, injured 2,234 others and displaced around 26,000, while Russia continues to occupy the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia).
