The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has approved the MEGOBARI Act, a legislative initiative aimed at enhancing stability in Georgia and Eastern Europe, as part of a broader set of bills advancing American interests abroad.

In a joint statement following the committee’s legislative session, Chairman Jim Risch (Republican) and Ranking Member Jeanne Shaheen (Democrat) emphasized their commitment to working together to push forward key initiatives, including the MEGOBARI Act.

“The MEGOBARI Act will promote stability in Georgia and Eastern Europe more broadly,” the senators stated. “As Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, we’re committed to working together to advance these bills and other effective legislation throughout our tenure.”

Alongside the MEGOBARI Act, the committee also passed the BUST FENTANYL Act, targeting Chinese financial actors involved in the illicit drug trade, as well as resolutions reaffirming US support for Taiwan and condemning China’s actions against Hong Kong’s autonomy.

The passage of these measures underscores Washington’s continued focus on strengthening democratic institutions in Eastern Europe and countering global security threats. The MEGOBARI Act specifically reaffirms the US dedication to supporting Georgia’s sovereignty, economic development, and regional security.

The legislation now moves forward in the Senate, where it will require further approval before being enacted into law.
