King Charles III of the United Kingdom has expressed sorrow over the death of Ilia II of the Georgian Orthodox Church, the faithful and all who mourn the Patriarch’s passing.
“I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of His Holiness Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia. He will remain in our memory as a man who dedicated his life to the Georgian Orthodox Church, spiritual guidance and the enduring service of the Georgian people. His ministry was distinguished by wisdom and high moral authority, which earned him immense respect both within Georgia and beyond,” the letter read.
King Charles also recalled Patriarch Ilia II’s 2011 visit to the United Kingdom, during which he met with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, calling it a testament to the “warm and respectful” relations between their churches and peoples.
“I extend my sincere condolences to the clergy and faithful of the Georgian Orthodox Church, as well as to all who mourn his passing,” the letter concluded.
