On 16 December, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the invitation extended to Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili to address the European Parliament.

“The European Parliament stands in solidarity with the people of Georgia, who have been peacefully and passionately fighting for a European future in the streets for two weeks now. They wave EU flags while facing water cannons. Citizens of Georgia, we see you, we hear you, and we stand with you,” Metsola said during her speech.

She strongly condemned the repression of the opposition and the use of force against peaceful protesters in Georgia. Metsola also called for sanctions on those responsible for the violence, urging all 27 EU member states to unite in taking decisive measures.

President Metsola noted that discussions are ongoing with Zourabichvili about the most appropriate format for her address to the European Parliament. “We have invited President Salome Zourabichvili to the European Parliament to discuss the current situation and explore solutions together,” she concluded.
