Employees of the Migration Department of Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs have detained 28 foreign nationals as part of a special immigration control operation aimed at combating illegal migration, the Ministry said on Saturday.
The body added the operation was conducted based on intelligence gathered by the department. Designated locations were inspected in order to identify foreign citizens staying in Georgia without legal grounds.
As a result of the comprehensive measures, 28 foreign nationals were detained, including citizens of Iran, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Nepal, Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Jordan, Ethiopia and Afghanistan.
The Ministry said it was established that the detainees were residing in the country in violation of the requirements set out by Georgia’s Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons.
The detained individuals have been placed at the Migration Department’s temporary accommodation centre, where relevant procedures are underway to facilitate their removal from the country.
