Georgian police detain 50 foreign nationals over illegal stay

Georgia’s Interior Ministry has detained 50 foreign nationals during a nationwide special immigration control operation, the ministry said on Monday.

The detainees are citizens of Nigeria, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, China, Thailand, Russia, India, Iraq, Turkmenistan and Egypt, according to the ministry.

The ministry said the detained individuals had violated requirements established by Georgia’s law on the legal status of foreigners and stateless persons.

The detainees have been placed in the Migration Department’s temporary accommodation centre, while procedures are underway for their removal from Georgia.

The latest operation follows a series of immigration enforcement measures by the Interior Ministry. On 22 September, the ministry said 83 foreign nationals had been expelled from Georgia, bringing the number expelled since the beginning of 2026 to more than 3,000 at that time.
