Georgia’s Migration Department has detained 64 foreign nationals suspected of staying in the country illegally following special immigration control operations conducted nationwide, the Interior Ministry said on Friday.

The detainees include citizens of Jordan, Pakistan, Turkey, Russia, India, Bangladesh, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, China, Thailand and Uzbekistan.

The ministry said the detainees had violated the requirements of Georgia’s law on the legal status of aliens and stateless persons.

The 64 individuals have been transferred to the Migration Department’s temporary accommodation centre, where procedures are under way to deport them from the country.

The Interior Ministry added that more than 20,000 foreign nationals had been checked during special immigration control operations since the relevant legislative amendments came into force.
