Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili paid tribute to the country’s military veterans on Veterans Day, thanking them on behalf of the nation for their service and sacrifices.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the occasion, Kavelashvili honoured the memory of those who lost their lives fighting for Georgia’s freedom, saying their courage, dedication and loyalty to their homeland were an inseparable part of the country’s history and statehood.
“Georgia is a nation of heroes. Our centuries-long history, marked by turmoil and hardship, is undeniable proof of this. It is a history of which each and every one of you here today is a living, honourable and integral part,” Kavelashvili said.
The president also stressed the importance of protecting veterans’ social welfare, healthcare, dignity and well-being, describing support for former service personnel as both a moral responsibility and a national priority.
“Your contribution to our nation and country is invaluable. Caring for veterans is a moral duty and an unwavering priority of our state and society. It is the state’s responsibility to ensure that each of you experiences genuine respect, support and recognition every day,” he said.
Addressing global security challenges, Kavelashvili emphasised the importance of preserving peace, strengthening state institutions and maintaining national unity amid ongoing wars and conflicts around the world.
He said veterans’ experiences served as a powerful reminder of the value of peace and freedom.
“Your experience teaches us that peace cannot be taken for granted. It requires constant vigilance, resilience, a strong state and national unity,” Kavelashvili said.
The ceremony was attended by the prime minister, parliamentary speaker, defence minister, director of the State Service of Veterans Affairs, representatives of the Georgian Orthodox Church’s Patriarchate and invited guests.
