Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili has described the Constitutional Court as a key institutional safeguard for national security, sovereignty and political stability.

Speaking at an event marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Georgia’s Constitutional Court, Kavelashvili said strong state institutions were essential to protecting the country's sovereignty and ensuring that political processes remained within constitutional boundaries.

“One of the main pillars of our national security and sovereignty is built on strong institutions. The Constitutional Court is the institutional guarantee that ensures public stability and keeps political processes within the constitutional framework,” the president said.

Kavelashvili said that following the restoration of Georgia's independence, building a new democratic and legal system had become a vital national priority.

In this context, he described the establishment of the Constitutional Court as a significant step towards putting the rule of law into practice.

The president also highlighted Georgia's historical legal traditions, arguing that the country's constitutional system was rooted in centuries of statehood and legal thought.

“Constitutional review is the modern continuation of this centuries-old tradition - a fundamental pillar of a state governed by the rule of law, ensuring a balance between the branches of government, protecting individual freedoms and clearly defining the limits of state power,” Kavelashvili said.

He added that Georgia's historical legal heritage had helped preserve the nation's spiritual, moral and political unity even during its most difficult periods.
