Greater state role in Anaklia port serves country's long-term interests, President Kavelashvili

Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili has said the state's decision to take the leading role in the development of the Anaklia deep-sea port serves Georgia's long-term interests.

Speaking to the media in Geneva on Wednesday, Kavelashvili described the decision as the action of a responsible state based on the country's strategic interests.

He said Georgia's approach throughout the decision-making process had been based on transparency, consideration of proposals from all interested countries and businesses, and openness to cooperation.

"Today, the state has the capacity to develop the Anaklia deep-sea port itself, and this is truly the best decision. It is important that the state will own the port and hold the controlling stake, while at the same time all interested parties will have the opportunity to pursue their interests," Kavelashvili said.

He added that Georgia's economic development, its reputation as a reliable partner and growing international interest in the Middle Corridor provided a basis for increased involvement of different countries in the Anaklia port project.
