President Kavelashvili appoints Goga Kikilashvili to Georgia’s Constitutional Court

Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili has appointed Goga Kikilashvili as a judge of the Constitutional Court of Georgia, the presidential administration said.

Under Article 60 of Georgia’s Constitution, the nine-member Constitutional Court consists of judges appointed for 10-year terms. Three judges are appointed by the president, three are elected by Parliament with the support of at least three-fifths of its full membership, and three are appointed by the Supreme Court. The Constitutional Court itself confirms this composition and appointment system.

Kikilashvili will replace Giorgi Kverenchkhiladze, whose 10-year term expires on 2 October.

Kverenchkhiladze was appointed to the Constitutional Court by presidential decree in September 2016 and began serving as a judge on 2 October that year after taking the oath. He is also a constitutional law professor at Tbilisi State University.

The Constitutional Court, based in Batumi, is Georgia’s body for constitutional review and has jurisdiction over, among other matters, the constitutionality of legislation and disputes concerning elections and referendums.
