In Samegrelo region of Georgia, police have arrested a mother and grandmother on suspicion of abusing a 7-year-old child.
The disturbing details first came to light through a report by Georgian television network Formula, which also released photos showing visible injuries on the child’s body. According to a relative who spoke to the media, the child was physically assaulted, bitten, and even locked in a pigsty. The relative further claimed that the child was only given water to survive.
Formula reports that the child is now safe and under protection.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia confirmed late at night that both suspects were detained shortly after the incident came to light. The mother is 44 years old and the grandmother is 70.
Authorities have charged the pair with aggravated domestic violence against a minor, committed with prior intent and as a group — both considered aggravating factors under Georgian law. If found guilty, they face up to three years in prison.
Police also confirmed that the child had sustained multiple injuries across various parts of the body as a result of the abuse.
