Georgian civil activist Nata Peradze on Friday said she has been notified that a criminal investigation has been opened against her in Berlin over an allegedly insulting Facebook post.
Peradze noted she received a letter informing her that a criminal case had been launched in connection with a Facebook post published in Germany.
“Apparently, under German law, Facebook insults are dealt with under criminal law,” Peradze wrote on social media.
She said the notification did not identify the person who had filed the complaint, but included the date and time when the post was published. Peradze said this information had led her to form a view about who may have initiated the proceedings, but that she would wait for an official response before publicly identifying the person.
Peradze also published correspondence between her lawyer and the relevant authorities.
According to the letter, dated September 7, 2026, the lawyer informed the authorities that he had been retained to represent Peradze in the criminal investigation concerning an alleged insult made through Facebook.
The lawyer said that, on his advice, Peradze would exercise her right to remain silent until further notice.
