NATO vows to adopt new support package for Georgia

NATO will adopt new packages of support for our partners – Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Republic of Moldova. As well as Mauritania and Tunisia, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday, ahead of the alliance’s Madrid summit on Tuesday.

The Georgian delegation headed by PM Irakli Garibashvili are scheduled to attend the summit.

Stoltenberg stated that “at the summit, we will strengthen our forward defenses. We will enhance our battlegroups in the eastern part of the Alliance up to brigade-levels. We will transform the NATO Response Force. And increase the number of our high readiness forces to well over 300,000. We will also boost our ability to reinforce in crisis and conflict.”

He suggested that the alliance was scheduled to agree to a strengthened Comprehensive Assistance Package for Ukraine.

“This will include substantial deliveries of support. In areas like secure communications, anti-drone systems, and fuel. Over the longer term, we will help Ukraine transition from Soviet-era military equipment, to modern NATO equipment,” Stoltenberg stated.

 

He said that the summit would also address the food crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and would consider NATO’s response to Russia and China’s “increasing influence in our southern neighbourhood.”
