Tbilisi welcomes Nauru's move to cut ‘diplomatic ties’ with Georgia's Russian-occupied regions

Georgia has welcomed Nauru's decision to terminate diplomatic relations with the Russian-occupied Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), calling the move a reaffirmation of international law.

In a statement on Wednesday, Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nauru's Cabinet adopted the decision on 21 July to end diplomatic relations with the entities calling themselves the "Republic of South Ossetia, also known as the State of Alania," and the "Republic of Abkhazia."

The ministry said the decision underscored the importance of respecting international law and the principles that underpin international relations.

"With this decision, it has once again been confirmed that respect for and adherence to the norms of international law constitute the foundation of healthy international relations," the statement said.

The ministry also expressed Georgia's readiness to establish diplomatic relations with Nauru and to strengthen bilateral cooperation based on shared interests.

Abkhazia and Tskhinvali are internationally recognised as part of Georgia but have been under Russian control since the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.
