Georgian MP urges Belgian parliamentary leaders to help restore dialogue with EU

Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, said the Georgian delegation had held productive meetings with the speakers of both chambers of Belgium’s federal parliament, urging them to help facilitate the resumption of dialogue between Georgia and the European Union.

According to Samkharadze, the discussions covered Georgia’s domestic political developments, the regional security environment, the situation in the country’s occupied territories and relations between Georgia and the EU.

“We made it clear that the current situation serves neither Georgia’s nor the European Union’s interests. However, it was the EU that formally suspended the integration process,” Samkharadze said.

“Our message to the speakers of both chambers of the Belgian Parliament was that they should act as intermediaries with the EU to help restore dialogue. We are ready to resume talks and discuss any issue. Constructive dialogue is in the interests of both Georgia and the European Union.”

Samkharadze said the meetings also addressed the regional security environment and Georgia’s role in promoting peace in the South Caucasus.

He highlighted the importance of unlocking the full potential of the Middle Corridor, a transport and trade route connecting Asia and Europe through the South Caucasus.

“The European Union is one of the key stakeholders in developing the Middle Corridor, as significant volumes of cargo enter Europe through Georgia,” Samkharadze said.
