Georgian activist and teacher Nino Datashvili has been released from pre-trial detention after the court agreed to replace custody with 5000 GEL bail, following a request by the Prosecutor’s Office that was supported by the defence.

Lawyers said Datashvili’s health had deteriorated while in custody, leading to the change in the preventive measure.

Datashvili was detained on 20 June in connection with an incident at Tbilisi City Court on 9 June. She has been charged under Article 353² (Part 3) of the Criminal Code, which relates to assaulting a public official while performing their duty. The offence previously carried a penalty ranging from a fine to four to seven years in prison.
