Georgia is truly on its European path now. Yes, there are conditions. This is a big step forward and we should not underestimate it. On the contrary, it is also a sign of recognition and clear support – EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Joseph Borrell said in a video posted on Twitter late on Thursday.

The statement came shortly after the EU Council granted candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, while Georgia only had a European perspective.

“Today, the European Council recognised the momentous opportunity for Georgia’s further European perspective. Now we will work together on every step of the common way to build Georgia’s future in the EU,” Borrell tweeted.

Georgian PM Irakli Garibashhvili called the decision “historic” and pledged that the government was ready “ to implement all priorities in order to get the candidate status soon.”
