Opposition leader Melia hails President’s meeting with Zelenskyy amidst Gov’t criticism

Nika Melia, the leader of the opposition party Ahali and former chair of the United National Movement, on Monday welcomed the recent meeting between President Salome Zourabichvili and her Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy, emphasising its importance for both Zourabichvili personally and for the broader interests of Georgia. 

Melia also criticised the Georgian Dream ruling party’s stance against the meeting, suggesting it reflected the party’s alleged international isolation.

“The meeting between the presidents is a positive development, not just for Zourabichvili herself but also for the greater interests of Georgia,” Melia said. “The fact that the GD party has chosen to criticise this meeting further demonstrates their international isolation. It is regrettable that this party, which I hesitate to describe as truly political, continues to distance itself from the Western and developed world.”

The Presidents of Georgia and Ukraine convened in Switzerland as part of the Ukrainian Peace Summit, joined by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Head of Ukraine’s Presidential Administration Andriy Yermak, and Vice Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

During the summit, Zourabichvili congratulated Zelenskyy on the decision to initiate negotiations for EU accession and reaffirmed Georgia’s steadfast support and solidarity with Ukraine. She expressed optimism about the shared European integration path of Georgia and Ukraine.
