President joins NGOs’ march for EU integration this week

President Salome Zourabichvili on Wednesday said she would join a march organised by the domestic civil sector on Saturday aimed to “once again” demonstrate the public unity ahead of the European Council decision on December 15 whether to grant Georgia the bloc’s membership candidate status. 

The march is scheduled to commence on December 9 at 14:00, starting from Republic Square and progressing toward Europe Square. The highlight of the event will be the unveiling of the world’s largest EU flag at Europe Square, the organisers said. 

The President’s comment came following her meeting with a group of young athletes participating in the Our Voice for Europe signature campaign at the Orbelian Presidential Palace, initiated by Zourabichvili on November 8,when the European Commission recommended the Council to grant Georgia the requested status. 

The campaign involves an appeal to EU leaders, urging them to grant EU candidate status to Georgia.

During the meeting, the President addressed the athletes, emphasizing the significance of Georgia’s European integration process. 

“I am confident that your voices will resonate in Europe. Your success has already brought attention to our nation, but it is imperative to amplify our message. A joint effort is needed to ensure a collective voice from Georgia. In this spirit, a march of non-governmental organizations is scheduled for December 9, which I will join, along with others, to collectively affirm Georgia’s European identity. We anticipate a decisive response from Europe in the coming days. Long live our European future!”, the President said.
