The Georgian Prosecutor’s Office has called on defense lawyers to present official medical documentation confirming claims that some of those detained in connection with the October 4 protest events suffer from serious illnesses.

According to the statement on Friday, over the past two days, various media outlets and social media users had circulated reports alleging that several detainees or their minor children have severe health conditions and that the prosecution had ignored this fact. The agency, however, said that not a single medical document had been submitted to substantiate these claims.

“The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia urges the defense to, instead of participating in the campaign-style dissemination of information, at least present documents verifying the claims being circulated. This would allow us to assess the appropriateness of any particular preventive measure,” the statement read.

The Prosecutor’s Office added that unless such documentation was provided, it would become clear that the spread of unverified information served subjective public relations goals rather than the real interests of the defendants.
