Ruling party MP Ionatamishvili: PM’s UN speech was ‘historic’

The speech delivered by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze from the UN General Assembly’s main podium was a “historic and proud moment” for the country, Rati Ionatamishvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee, said in a social media post.

Ionatamishvili said it was a source of pride to hear Georgia’s voice “with dignity” on the world’s main political stage.

“The message of Georgia was clearly voiced before the world - the protection of peace, sovereignty, national interests and dignity,” he wrote, highlighting Kobakhidze’s reference to Georgia’s territorial integrity and the government’s stated commitment to resolving the issue of the country’s occupied territories through peaceful means.

He also said that the PM’s focus on Georgia’s economic potential, development and growing international role was important for international business and could provide additional impetus for attracting major foreign investment.

“Georgia is a small country, but it has a great history, its own voice and the right to determine its own future,” Ionatamishvili said.
