Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream (GD), has issued a response to the recent joint statement by 17 EU foreign ministers and the EU’s High Representative, calling it a “crude and unfair attack” on the Georgian people and democracy.
In a lengthy statement released by the party’s Political Council, the ruling bloc accused European officials of engaging in “Soviet-style disinformation”, double standards, and attempting to undermine Georgia’s sovereignty through what it described as politically motivated pressure tactics.
“The statement is filled with false accusations and propaganda,” the party said. “We urge all signatories to show greater responsibility in future communications.”
Georgian Dream claimed the EU’s criticism stems from the West’s frustration with the opposition’s electoral defeat, suggesting that European diplomats were rooting for the return of “deep state agents” under the opposition United National Movement (UNM). The party argued that recent elections were legitimate, citing positive assessments by the OSCE/ODIHR.
The statement also pushed back against accusations of political imprisonment, insisting that the jailed opposition figures were punished for violating legal obligations, including refusal to appear before parliamentary commissions — not for their political beliefs.
“Only 30 out of hundreds of violent protesters have been detained. If anything, this shows the high legal standards of our investigation,” the party claimed.
The statement went on to accuse the “deep state” of orchestrating global attacks on national sovereignty, citing Brexit as a “purposeful separation” designed to serve elite interests. The party expressed hope that Donald Trump would return to power and defeat the “deep state,” which it said had shifted its center of gravity from the US to Europe.
“We see uncontrolled migration, pseudo-liberal propaganda, and institutional decay rapidly eroding Europe's identity,” the party warned. “The cancellation of election results, political persecution, and media restrictions have become the norm in Europe.”
Despite its critical tone, Georgian Dream emphasized it is open to cooperation, but only on equal and respectful terms.
“We will not attack anyone, but neither will we allow anyone to undermine our sovereignty, identity, or the will of the Georgian people,” the party said. “Just as Georgia needs Europe, the EU needs Georgia.”
The latest escalation follows a joint statement by 17 European countries, including Germany, France, the UK, and Nordic and Baltic states, strongly condemning the ruling Georgian Dream government’s 'authoritarian' trajectory. The statement demanded the release of political prisoners, the repeal of repressive laws, and a return to democratic norms.
