Tbilisi City Hall introduces temporary traffic scheme amid central Rustaveli Avenue works

Tbilisi Municipality will introduce a temporary traffic scheme from September 1 to ease congestion caused by the ongoing rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue, Mayor Kakha Kaladze said on Wednesday.

The new scheme will introduce two-way traffic on several streets and provide alternative routes around the capital's main avenue. Kaladze urged residents to be patient, saying the extensive works are causing significant disruption, particularly for motorists.

Under the new arrangement:

• Pavle Ingorokva Street will become two-way.

• Parts of April 9 Street and Zurab Zhvania Street will also allow two-way traffic.

• Certain sections of Besiki and Shevchenko streets will operate one-way.

• Traffic on Lermontov Street will remain one-way, but its direction will change, allowing access from Kikodze and Machabeli streets toward Shalva Dadiani Street.

The municipality has also outlined two main routes to reach Tbilisi Classical Gymnasium, including routes via Leonidze-Ingorokhva-April 9 streets and via Chonkadze/Polikarp Kakabadze-Mtatsminda-Arsena streets.

Kaladze said the rehabilitation involves replacing outdated underground infrastructure and will continue to cause substantial disruption, including traffic restrictions, noise and dust.

He asked residents to tolerate the disruption until the end of November, saying the completed project would ultimately provide a fully renovated Rustaveli Avenue and modern infrastructure.
