NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Thursday said the Alliance considers it appropriate to continue its relationship with Georgia, while also expressing “serious” concerns over recent developments related to democracy and the rule of law.

Rutte noted that maintaining engagement remains important, particularly to preserve dialogue between the sides.

“At the same time, we must acknowledge recent developments. We call on Georgia to return to a pro-European, future-oriented path and ensure that progress continues in terms of democracy and the rule of law,” he said.

Rutte added that concerns in these areas are significant, but emphasised that continued cooperation provides an opportunity to address issues through dialogue rather than severing ties altogether.

“We believe it is better to continue the relationship and maintain channels for discussion, rather than say we disagree and cut off relations completely,” he stated.
